Well, don't most of us think that what we believe ourselves to be is what we are in reality? Take a look at this picture and think twice! I say this from experience. I, too, have always held the belief that if I, and only I, am convinced of my good nature, it will project itself in my personality by default.
But, here's the thing. If I just believe that I am genuinely nice to people and couldn't do any better to benefit them, it will ONLY lead me to being the way I am (no chance of improvement!). I might regard myself as an honest, forthright and a determined human being, but am I doing something about it? Maybe. But that hardly fills a tiny fraction of the glass. I try and go ahead to improve myself and my actions with the self-delusion that I'm already a pretty good person; I mean, look at that girl! At least I'm not as morally/intellectually/socially low-graded as her. And now I think to myself, who am I to judge? There's probably somebody else forming the exact same opinion about me!
So what do I do? I first admit to myself that I've got a long way to go before I can claim to be a morally/intellectually/socially perfect human being. And then I fix my imperfections through seemingly trivial actions. I say 'seemingly' because as trivial as they may be, they are, in fact, the drops that fill "the glass". And that's what matters, because just thinking about something and doing nothing about it is not going to take you or anyone anywhere. It merely proves that you are lying to yourself! Nothing can hinder your development more than self-deceit. But once you recognize your flaws and start doing something, making an effort to achieve self-perfection, you will have successfully opened the door to happiness.. And I truly believe that being happy with oneself is the best feeling in the world!!!
I'm pretty sure this is something you probably have already come to terms with, but it helps to give it a thought every now and then, so that your memory is refreshed in the midst of your extremely busy lives. Also, when you remember something you had forgotten, it makes you even more determined to follow it!!!
